1984 is perhaps one of the most famous dystopian novels. The novel was first published in 1949. The main character - Winston Smith - lives in London and works in the Ministry of Truth. Smith is a citizen of a country in which all people are monitored and all free-thinking is suppressed. Winston is not an adherent of such ideas, but he carefully hides it, because when a person is exposed, an inevitable "recovery" awaits, which is equivalent to mental death.
