"Dead Souls" is a novel by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, published in 1842. In the center of the plot is a former official, Pavel Nikolaevich Chichikov, who pretends to be a landowner. He buys up "dead souls", peasants who are considered alive, but have already died, since the main task of Chichikov is to achieve a high social status.
